As reported earlier, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) had recommended an increase in the Black Bear permits for the 2018 season, from 758 permits to 860 (102 more permits). The proposal was recently been approved by the Utah Wildlife Board.

They estimate this increase to translate into about 35 more bears being taken this season, approx. 400 in total.

According to Darren DeBloois, the DWR game mammals coordinator, "The state's bear population is doing really well, we're excited about that."

All of the approved black bear rules for the 2018 season will be made availabe online by February 1st.
